Who We Are
Essex Children’s Advocacy Center is a multidisciplinary partnership of professionals that investigates allegations of child abuse and coordinates services for children and families in a child-friendly, culturally sensitive way. In 2002, representatives from MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center, the Department of Children and Families and the District Attorney’s office began meeting to evaluate available resources and the respective gaps in services to child abuse victims and their families. These meetings resulted in the formation of a Steering Committee, with the goal of developing a program in Essex County based on the Children’s Advocacy Center Model. Today, the Essex CAC, under the leadership of the District Attorney’s Office is recognized as a charitable organization, and recently achieved full Accreditation with the National Children’s Alliance.
How We Can Help: The Essex Children’s Advocacy Center is a public-private partnership agency that provides trauma informed and victim sensitive services for children and their families when abuse is a reported concern. The Essex CAC provides a safe child friendly environment where children of all ages can be interviewed regarding abuse concerns and meet with a team of professionals who are dedicated to investigating crimes against children. The team works to coordinate the investigation, provide appropriate and state of the art medical services and counseling referrals to ensure the safety of the child and family.
Our Mission: Essex CAC strives to reduce the impact of trauma on victims and families, while increasing access to child and family advocates, medical evaluation and treatment, mental health referral and the criminal justice system.
•Serve children and their families when there has been an allegation of sexual or physical abuse.
•Develop a child-friendly center, with a welcoming and neutral environment to provide children with a safe place to talk to a team of professionals about what happened to them.
•Follow the best standards of practice when interviewing and investigation allegations pf abuse by minimizing the stress of children, maintaining a neutral stance and maximizing the equality quality of evidence. A specially-trained forensic interviewer speaks one-on-one with a child while the remaining team members observe the interview via closed circuit TV.
•Utilize the multidisciplinary team, including DCF, police, medical and other professionals, who share information and coordinate investigation and prosecution, while making appropriate decisions regarding the safety and protection of the child.
•Provide a link to medical and mental help professionals.
